About the Program
The Athlete of the Year (AOTY) event is the culminating celebration of the 2016-17 Athlete of the Week scholarship program, sponsored by Coordinated Health and hosted by The Morning Call. The program is in its fourth year, having previously awarded more than 100 high school athletes with over $100,000 in scholarships. Each Athlete of the Week recipient receives a $1,000 scholarship and is then eligible for the Athlete of the Year award of a $10,000 scholarship.
The annual AOTY winner is decided based on a three-way vote between The Morning Call sports department, the Coordinated Health leadership team, and the results of an online voting tool. The Morning Call and Coordinated Health use the following criteria in their consideration for the Athlete of the Year recipient:
- Academics: The athlete serves as a strong role model in the classroom and plans to attend college.
- Leadership: The athlete shows a commitment to the people and organizations in his/her community.
- Athletics: The athlete displays a high level of performance in his/her chosen sport(s).
For the first time since the award’s inception, in 2017, CH will present TWO Athlete of the Year awards; one to a male athlete and one to a female athlete, each of whom will receive a $10,000 scholarship.
